Scafell Pike via Little Narrow Cove

Please pronounce this mountain properly - "Scawfle" not "ScarFELL" - check with Wainwright himself.

This is one of the longer approaches (from Langdale is probably the longest) but less well known approaches, start at the bottom of Hardknott Pass. Follow the valley path to Lingcove bridge then turn left and up into Great Moss - boggy but usually deserted and feels really wild & remote.

Scafell Pike & Great Moss

Once in upper Eskdale keep to the left of the Esk pastCam Spout Crag, then the impressive Dow Crag before turning left into Little Narrow Cove

Scafell Pike from Great Moss, Dow Crag to the right

Littel Narrowcove itself is an easy rocky and scree scramble with options to avoid the main summit path by cutting up left and only meet the crowds in the final few feet. As an aside, but not a Wainwright route, there is a brilliant grade 3 scramble to the right up on to Ill Crag.

Final few feet - relatively uncrowded

Descent by retracing steps not advised - recommend walk along the summit ridge over Broad Crag to Esk Hause - good views all the way.

Upper Eskdale and Great Moss from Esk Hause

At Esk Hause it is a relatively easy route back down to Great Moss and retrace steps from there. Looking at the OS map there would be a great extension over Esk Pike & Bowfell, dropping down into Ling Cove - one day.
